Expert Testimony

Legal matters involving brain function, cognition, behavior, memory, disability, injury, aging, or psychological functioning often require more than a standard clinical opinion. They require careful evaluation, clear reasoning, strong documentation, and the ability to explain complex neuropsychological findings in a way that attorneys, courts, agencies, insurers, and other decision-makers can understand.

Goldberg & LaRosa Psychology Associates, PLLC provides forensic neuropsychology services, expert consultation, and expert testimony for matters involving cognitive, neurological, psychological, developmental, behavioral, and functional questions.

Our work is grounded in clinical neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, psychological assessment, behavioral analysis, record review, and careful interpretation of functional abilities. We help clarify how a person’s condition may affect daily life, work capacity, school functioning, decision-making, behavior, memory, executive functioning, and long-term needs.

Why Choose Goldberg & LaRosa Psychology Associates?

Forensic and legal evaluations require clinical expertise, objectivity, precision, and the ability to communicate clearly. A strong expert opinion should be understandable, evidence-based, and directly connected to the legal or referral question.

Forensic Neuropsychology Services

Forensic neuropsychology applies neuropsychological knowledge, assessment methods, and clinical reasoning to legal and administrative questions. These services may be helpful when a case involves questions about brain injury, cognitive impairment, disability, capacity, emotional functioning, behavioral change, developmental disorders, or functional limitations.

Forensic neuropsychology services may include:

  • Independent neuropsychological evaluations
  • Forensic neuropsychological evaluations
  • Record review and case consultation
  • Expert opinion regarding cognitive and functional impairment
  • Expert testimony, when appropriate
  • Consultation with attorneys, agencies, insurers, or care teams
  • Review of prior psychological, neuropsychological, educational, medical, or rehabilitation records
  • Analysis of consistency between reported symptoms, test findings, records, and observed functioning

Each case is approached individually. The scope of work depends on the referral question, available records, legal context, and clinical issues involved.

Types of Cases We May Assist With

Our forensic and expert consultation services may be relevant in matters involving neurological, psychological, developmental, educational, workplace, disability, or functional questions.

Examples may include:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Concussion and post-concussive symptoms
  • Memory impairment
  • Dementia and cognitive decline
  • Stroke and other neurological conditions
  • Executive function impairment
  • ADHD and attention-related limitations
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Learning disabilities and dyslexia
  • Intellectual disability
  • Functional capacity concerns
  • Workplace accommodation or return-to-work questions

  • Personal injury matters
  • Educational or school-related disputes
  • Behavioral or emotional changes related to neurological or developmental factors

We help clarify how clinical findings relate to the person’s real-world functioning and the specific questions being asked in the matter.

Expert Testimony

Expert testimony may be appropriate when a legal matter requires a clear explanation of neuropsychological findings, diagnostic impressions, functional limitations, prognosis, treatment needs, or the relationship between clinical findings and a claimed injury or condition.

Expert testimony may address questions such as:

  • How do neuropsychological findings relate to daily functioning?
  • Are the cognitive symptoms consistent with the history, records, and test findings?
  • What are the person’s strengths and limitations?
  • How may brain injury, neurological illness, developmental disability, or psychiatric factors affect functioning?
  • What accommodations, supports, treatment, or care planning may be appropriate?
  • Are there alternative explanations for the person’s cognitive, emotional, or behavioral presentation?

Our approach is to present information clearly, objectively, and in a way that connects scientific and clinical knowledge to the legal question at hand.

Independent Neuropsychological Evaluations

An independent neuropsychological evaluation can help clarify the nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and functional impairment. These evaluations may be requested by attorneys, insurers, agencies, schools, employers, or other parties involved in decision-making.

An evaluation may include:

  • Clinical interview
  • Review of medical, educational, psychological, legal, rehabilitation, or employment records
  • Neuropsychological testing
  • Psychological or behavioral assessment
  • Assessment of memory, attention, language, processing speed, executive functioning, and problem-solving
  • Assessment of emotional and behavioral functioning
  • Validity and consistency considerations, when appropriate
  • Functional analysis of how findings affect daily life, school, work, or independent living

The report is designed to answer the referral question clearly and to explain findings in a way that is useful for the legal, clinical, educational, or administrative context.

Record Review and Case Consultation

Not every case requires a new evaluation. In some matters, attorneys or agencies may need expert review of existing records, prior evaluations, medical documentation, school records, treatment history, or rehabilitation notes.

Record review and consultation may help identify:

  • Whether prior evaluations adequately addressed the referral question
  • Whether test findings are consistent with the reported symptoms and history
  • Important gaps in the existing record
  • Possible alternative explanations for symptoms
  • Whether additional evaluation may be needed
  • How cognitive, behavioral, emotional, or developmental findings may affect functioning
  • Whether recommendations are supported by the available data

This type of consultation can help attorneys and decision-makers understand the strengths, limitations, and implications of the available clinical information.

Neuropsychological Questions Commonly Addressed

Forensic neuropsychology often involves complex questions about causation, diagnosis, severity, functional impact, treatment needs, and prognosis.

We may assist with questions such as:

  • Does the available evidence support the presence of cognitive impairment?
  • What cognitive domains appear affected?
  • How severe are the person’s limitations?
  • Are symptoms consistent with traumatic brain injury, concussion, stroke, dementia, ADHD, autism, psychiatric factors, or another condition?
  • How do the findings affect work, school, independent living, decision-making, or daily functioning?
  • What supports, accommodations, or treatment recommendations are clinically appropriate?
  • Are there inconsistencies that require further analysis?

Our role is to help clarify these questions using clinical expertise, neuropsychological methods, and careful interpretation of the available evidence.

Conditions and Functional Concerns

Cases may involve a wide range of clinical and functional concerns. We are experienced in evaluating and explaining conditions that affect cognition, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, and daily functioning.

Areas of focus may include:

  • Traumatic brain injury and concussion
  • Memory loss and amnestic disorders
  • Dementia and mild cognitive impairment
  • Stroke and neurological illness
  • Executive dysfunction
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Learning disabilities and dyslexia
  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Depression, anxiety, trauma, and emotional factors affecting cognition
  • Behavioral changes related to neurological or developmental conditions
  • Functional limitations affecting work, school, care needs, or independent living

Clear Communication for Legal and Clinical Audiences

Neuropsychological evidence can be complex. Attorneys, courts, families, agencies, and insurers need information that is accurate, organized, and understandable.

We focus on explaining:

  • What the evaluation shows
  • What the evaluation does not show
  • How findings relate to the referral question
  • How cognitive or psychological limitations may affect real-world functioning
  • What recommendations are supported by the data
  • What additional information may be needed

Our reports and opinions are written to support clear decision-making in legal, educational, workplace, medical, and care-planning contexts.

Objectivity and Professional Standards

Forensic work requires objectivity. Our role is not to advocate for one side. Our role is to provide a careful, clinically informed opinion based on the available information, professional standards, and the specific referral question.

We approach each matter with attention to:

  • Clinical accuracy
  • Careful record review
  • Appropriate test selection
  • Consistency between data sources
  • Functional relevance
  • Clear explanation of limitations
  • Ethical and professional practice

This approach helps ensure that opinions are defensible, useful, and grounded in the evidence.
